The CDC tracked 35,063 cases of of primary and secondary syphilis in 2018, increasing 34% for women and 11% for men compared to 2017. However, men accounted for nearly 86% of primary and secondary syphilis cases, with men who have sex with men accounting for 54% of all syphilis cases. Syphilis is curable, and it's typically treated with a series of three penicillin injections. The most common symptom of primary syphilis is one or more sores at the site of infection; without treatment, it develops into secondary syphilis, which is characterized by a fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes. In rare cases, if the condition still goes unchecked, it could develop into tertiary syphilis, which can lead to severe medical problems affecting other areas of the body, including the heart and brain.

Man refuses to believe he gave multiple women STD in viral text exchange - Fox News

A man confronted by a woman who said he exposed her to an STD refused to accept the claim in a text message exchange that has gone viral.

In a screenshot of the conversation posted on Reddit, the woman told the man she contracted chlamydia and that she was certain of who she got it from.

HAWAII'S SPIKE IN STDs LINKED TO ONLINE DATING

"I go get tested after each new person, and you were my most recent new unprotected hookup and I most definitely have chlamydia from it," she wrote, apparently on a dating app.

The man, identified as Joshua, simply replied "Oh" to which the unidentified woman wrote, "No comment?"

Joshua then explained that it was "pretty hard to believe" that she got the STD from him because "I haven't had any symptoms for a year."

"Ok, well just telling you bc that's the results and literally haven't slept with anyone else and got checked before you," the woman said. "I'm not upset or anything but … just so you know."

Apparently not fazed, Joshua continued to push back on the suggestion the sexually-transmitted disease came from him. "Not the first girl to come up claiming I gave it to them when I didn't so I could care less," he wrote.

The woman replied, "Think what you want but getting checked is really easy and could protect you in the future."

MAN DIAGNOSED WITH RARE SYPHILIS INFECTION IN BRAIN AFTER STRUGGLING TO WALK, TALK

Redditors were astonished by the man's cavalier attitude regarding such a serious topic. "Not the first girl".. well okay then, case solved you have it," a Reddit user commented.

"Lol this guy thinks her not being the first girl to tell him he's spreading STDs is like an insult," another said.

Many commenters pointed out how well the woman handled the conversation, despite the man's unbothered demeanor. "She's handling that pretty well. Especially after that last comment," one person wrote.

One Redditor specifically addressed the man's claim that he didn't have chlamydia because he wasn't exhibiting symptoms.

"Chlamydia is usually asymptomatic. Only 30% of women and 10% of men actually show symptoms," the Redditor wrote. Another added, "Chlamydia often shows no symptoms and is easily treated and cured so either way this guy is an idiot."

One Redditor jokingly pointed out the silver lining: "On the plus side, he's probably going to end up infertile."

In Baltimore, less than half of MSM using PrEP screened for STDs - Healio

Posted: 06 Dec 2019 12:00 AM PST

Despite clinical guidelines recommending they be screened biannually for STIs, less than half of men who have sex with men, or MSM, in Baltimore who were taking pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, for HIV prevention were tested for syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia upon PrEP initiation during a recent 30-month period, study findings showed.

Researchers said the study was developed to "provide real-world estimates of STI screening and positivity among MSM PrEP users by PrEP visit, STI, and anatomic site."

The study population included 290 MSM who initiated PrEP as part of a demonstration project implemented by the Baltimore City Health Department between Sept. 30, 2015, and March 31, 2018. Following PrEP initiation, the researchers calculated STI screening for syphilis and gonorrhea/chlamydia at all anatomic sites and positivity at PrEP visits up to 12 months.

Just 43.1% of MSM were screened according to the PrEP clinical guidelines at initiation, the researchers reported. Among new PrEP users, 79.3% were screened for syphilis, 69.3% for urogenital gonorrhea/chlamydia, 55.9% for rectal gonorrhea/chlamydia and 69.3% for oropharyngeal gonorrhea/chlamydia.

The researchers reported that 7.8% of participants tested positive for syphilis. Participants also tested positive for rectal (11.1%), oropharyngeal (7.5%) and urogenital (5%) gonorrhea, and rectal (11.7%), urogenital (5%) and oropharyngeal (1.5%) chlamydia.

They noted that reporting anal and oral sex, as opposed to neither, was independently associated with STI screening at the PrEP initiation visit. They highlighted that STI screening rates were lower at the biannual PrEP visits, but positivity rates for syphilis and rectal gonorrhea/chlamydia were higher.

"Our results suggest that STI screening, particularly rectal gonorrhea/chlamydia screening, among MSM PrEP users is lower than estimated levels needed to reduce STI transmission, and that providers may be following disparate guidelines on STI screening," the researchers wrote. "This underscores the need for provider training on PrEP clinical guidelines for STI screening. Future work should focus on identifying individual and provider-level barriers and facilitators to improve STI screening frequency among PrEP users." – by Marley Ghizzone
