STD cases hit record high for fifth year running - ABC News STD cases hit record high for fifth year running - ABC News Posted: 10 Oct 2019 12:00 AM PDT Sexually transmitted infections hit a record high 2.4 million cases in 2018, making it the fifth year in a row that cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis have spiked, according to new numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency pointed to the budget cuts that have hit sexually transmitted disease programs in recent years as a driving factor behind the disease spike. Cuts to state and local programs have translated into clinic closures, decreased staffing and ultimately fewer patient screenings and follow-ups. Over the last five years, chlamydia cases increased 19%, gonorrhea cases increased 63% and syphilis cases increased 71%. Human papillomavirus virus, which 79 million Americans are infected with, remains the most common sexually transmitted disease. Most ...

North Korea Forces STD Tests for Citizens Returning From Trips to China - Radio Free Asia North Korea Forces STD Tests for Citizens Returning From Trips to China - Radio Free Asia Posted: 29 Oct 2019 02:05 PM PDT Authorities in North Korea are trying to prevent sexually transmitted diseases from entering the country and spreading by forcing citizens returning from China to undergo STD tests, residents told RFA's Korean Service. The residents say, however, that the initiative will be ineffective because those who test positive can still bribe their way into the country, and the tests do not address the spread of disease within North Korea itself. "I was tested for STDs and AIDS right before I entered the country," a source from Hamhung, South Hamgyong province told RFA's Korean Service on October 27. The source, who last week had returned from a personal trip to the Yanji Autonomous Korean Prefecture in China's Jilin...

We asked these 5 London councils why they aren't joining a free postal STI test service - MyLondon We asked these 5 London councils why they aren't joining a free postal STI test service - MyLondon Posted: 10 Oct 2019 12:00 AM PDT Sexual health is a huge issue in London - figures from 2015 showed that one in four cases of sexually transmitted infections in England were diagnosed in the city. One of the best ways to reduce the number of new infections is regular testing, allowing those with STIs to get the right treatment and avoiding spreading them on to unsuspecting partners. Given how difficult it can be to get an appointment at the GP, the Sexual Health London service sought to make access to testing free and easy with their postal testing kits. The kit, which tests for infections including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, is ordered online and easy to use for Londoners over the ag...

(WNDU) – The number of sexually transmitted disease cases in Michigan has increased again, mirroring nationwide trends. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced a national all-time high in the number of cases of syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia in 2018. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says the state is on a similar arc. "Many infected people are unaware of their status, which allows them to unknowingly pass it to their partners," said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MDHHS chief medical executive and chief deputy for health. "All sexually active individuals should speak to their health care provider about regular testing so they can get proper treatment and prevent the spread of disease." The state health department says most of the increases are occ...
