STI Stats: Data, Risk, and Prevention - Verywell Health

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also commonly called sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are infections passed through vaginal, oral, or anal sex. Many can have an STI unknowingly if they are asymptomatic (without symptoms) or exhibit mild symptoms. Screening is essential for diagnosing, treating, and preventing further spread.  Sexually transmitted infections are quite common in the United States (U.S.), and rates have increased steadily, with millions of new infections occurring yearly. According to a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention surveillance report on STIs, over 2 million chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis cases were reported in 2020. This article reviews the latest statistics on the most common STIs and discusses how to reduce your risk. Pornpak Khunatorn / Getty Images How Many People Have STIs? The 34th World AIDS Day: “Achieving Equity to End HIV” - IDN InDepthNews | Analysis That Matters

By Somar Wijayadasa* Last year, every two minutes one person got infected with HIV, and every minute one person died of AIDS-related causes. NEW YORK (IDN) — Every year on December 1, people throughout the world commemorate World AIDS Day to raise awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. The day is earmarked to educate people about the disease's causes and early symptoms, to eliminate the stigma associated with it, to support those who are HIV positive, and pay tribute to those who lost their lives to the disease. The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) believes that the far-reaching negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and other global crises, have depleted its limited resources, faltering the progress against the HIV/AIDS pandemic, thereby leaving millions of lives at risk. Accordingly, the theme for this year's World AIDS Day is "Putting Ourselves to the Test: Achieving Equity to End HIV", and UNAIDS urge...

Condom use is down despite STDs like chlamydia, syphilis on the rise - The Washington Post

Image
The basket of free ultrathin and studded condoms stayed full to the brim — a recurrent reality that no longer surprised the D.C. health workers offering HIV testing this month at a downtown plaza. Public health authorities are confronting a rise in sexually transmitted infections in a world where condom use has steadily declined — and, with it, one of the most effective ways of curbing the spread of disease. " They'll laugh at it, or sometimes they get it and throw it away," said Kevins Anglade, a community outreach worker for Whitman-Walker Health, a D.C.-based LGBT health-care organization that opened in the 1970s as the Gay Men's Venereal Disease Clinic. "It's a new normal, which is very sad." The United States recorded nearly 2.5 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in 2021, more than doubling in the past two decades, according to preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About half of new infections las...

What you don’t know about a leading morning-sickness drug - Maclean’s

Image
(ERproductions Ltd/Getty Images) Last August, Toronto family physician Nav Persaud watched with amazement—and some frustration—as Kim Kardashian accomplished with one Instagram post what he had been trying to do for years: Put klieg lights on a prescription drug for morning sickness in pregnancy. Persaud, a drug researcher at Toronto's St. Michael's Hospital, had been investigating Diclectin, a time-release tablet that combines pyridoxine (vitamin B6) and the antihistamine doxylamine manufactured by Duchesnay Inc. in Blainville, Que. The medication, on the market in Canada since 1983, and the only prescription drug approved by Health Canada to treat the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), is a staple in this country; it is prescribed in one of two live births. Its popularity has been paved by assurances and positive studies from what was once an unimpeachable source: Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children's Motherisk unit, the front line for information for doctors ...

How To Choose The Best Cough Medicine - Forbes

Image
In the same way that there are different types of coughs, there are two different types of over-the-counter cough medicines to help ease acute coughing caused by a cold or flu. Antitussives: Otherwise known as cough suppressants, antitussives block the cough reflex by decreasing activity in the part of the brain that causes coughing. Some brand names include Triaminic Cold and Cough and Robitussin Cough. Expectorants: This type of cough medicine works to thin mucus, which can in turn help your cough move mucus out, clearing your airway. Two expectorant brand names include Mucinex and Robitussin Chest Congestion. The type of cough medicine that will work best for you will depend on the issue you're dealing with. "An expectorant is typically used for a wet cough (caused by the common cold, bronchitis, etc.) to help clear congestion from the respiratory tract, whereas an antitussive is used for a dry cough to control the cough reflex," explains Niraj Patel, D.O.,...

West Nile Neuroinvasive Disease Treated With High-Dose Corticosteroids - Cureus

Image
West Nile neuroinvasive disease, which includes encephalitis, meningitis, or acute flaccid paralysis, is one of the two most common manifestations of West Nile virus (WNV). According to many national agencies, since 1999, WNV has been one of the most common causes of epidemic viral encephalitis in the United States, especially in the state of California, and it will likely remain an important cause of neurological disease for years to come. To date, the mainstay of treatment for West Nile neuroinvasive disease has been supportive care with no data to support the routine use of any agents. Here, we present a unique case of West Nile encephalitis in a 61-year-old male who was successfully treated with a five-day course of high-dose corticosteroids. Although this rapid improvement could be a mere coincidence, it facilitates the need for further trials to determine if high-dose corticosteroids and other drugs may benefit patients in the treatment of West Nile neuroinvasive disease. I...
